When you want to commit to playing derby you will have to buy your own kit. This section is to give you some general things to help you get through your Minimum Skills, some exercise tips. As well as advice on...
Choosing you derby name
Choosing your derby name is one of the fun early stages of your derby career, choosing a name that will represent you as a skater and athlete.
The old name database is twoevils.com is the roller derby name database that most people check their names against. But it is infrequently updated (like less than once a year) and it is better to do a quick google to see if there is anyone in your country who has a similar name instead. Derby role call is the newer site that names are being registered to, but do consider your name carefully before submitting it.
Also neither twoevils nor derby role call is actually anything to do with the WFTDA and there is no requirement according to WFTDA to have different names from anyone else (as me and some friends found out at the UK ref clinic). It is just nicer to be unique. Within your league; however, you do need to have a different number from anyone else or you can never be rostered together.
Use a derivative of your own name
Some people use a play on or derivative of their own name so this might be a good place to start. Before you finalize your name try a few different ones out to see how you feel about them - ask your league.
Pick a 'persona' or theme
Aspects about your personality can work well here, so emotions e.g. moody, scary.
Or that persona could relate to a quality you want to have: Sexiness, Strength, Quick, Poise, Jumpy, etc.
Common derby themes relate to violence or using derby related words such as 'juke, jam, block etc'
Punning
Many derby names involve a pun, or play on words, frequently with famous films, peoples names or characters.
Some good names I've heard of:
Jessie Slay (combining violence with fame)
MetaliKAT (combination of band name with their own name - Kathryn)
Olivia Shoot'n John (again combining violence with fame)
I mean consider also how your family might respond when coming to see you play you might not want your child or kid sibling yelling a name that incorporates swear words... Although saying that when my older parents came to watch me a whole amusing conversation was sparked off about the meaning behind my derby no. (which is 69...)
But most importantly, pick a name that speaks to you. At the end of the day the most important person who needs to like it is you :)
