Minimum skills
Passing your minimum skills will be the first step to being eligible to play for your team. It takes each person varying amounts of time so don't compare yourself continually to others in your league - it won't help you develop.
Each league assesses you and prepares you slightly differently too, so dig around find out what to expect from the league you're joining.
There is also an app that you can track your own progress with: the minimum skills app.

Things to help
- Get out and skate outside when the weather is good - or at least dry
- Do other exercise to build up your leg strength and stamina - I have just started doing this again and my stability is really benefiting from my stronger core (tummy muscles)
- Attend as many sessions as you can
- Listen to the experienced skaters
- Don't be afraid to ask for extra help or advice, if one person can't help you ask another
- Read up about derby, attend games - this might sound like a cop out as you might not be skating yourself but seriously if you know what derby is about you can begin to piece your knowledge together. This is something some non-rookie skaters don't always do and you can usually tell as they lack understanding of the game and rules compared to others who do
- Volunteer to NSO it can be great for learning all the nuances of the game - which is good for passing the written minimum skills test - here is an example test. See the rules page for more detailed introduction to the rules of roller derby.
