Interval training
As someone who used to run competitively, training specifically for middle distance running (800-1500m) I have a vast knowledge of interval training. This means everything I talk about here I have applied to derby based on my history of 5+ years in this type of training.
Interval training can best be explained by short periods of exercise broken up by periods of rest.
An example of a quick core workout in the style of interval training would be as follows:
Then the whole set is repeated again twice more, in order.
Don't do all three lots of the exercise after each other e.g. 60 sit ups then 60 back raises - that isn't how interval training works. This is because that doesn't give those muscles the chance to rest and build up in between each repetition. So it should be like this...

This can be done with anything - whether it is number of sprints round a track, broken up by different core workouts or lifting weights in a gym workout broken up with some time running on a treadmill and some cycling. So long as you then go back and repeat.
